Glorietta Bay with Friends

Sometimes you need a setting change to take a break. Our friends Steve & Janny, on their 43' catamaran, invited us to raft up with them on Coronado Is. So we motored over there on Thurs night, it was so peaceful and nice.

Anchor Day 5 11/04/2016 Glorietta Bay, CA
Steve and Janny are working on their boat projects and so are we! Janny and I used my sewing machine to mend a few items we had in need of repair. Tim helped Steve with some dinghy fixes and upgrades and hoisted Steve up his mast to take some measurements. Steve helped Tim service our batteries.

Early in the morning on Friday, I applied Peel Away to the Starboard side of the cockpit. The process took about 2 hours. My day will be spent cleaning this all off come tomorrow!

We called it a day about 1700 and we all got ready to go ashore. Steve went for his run and Janny, Tim and I took Gracie the dog for a walk while we chatted about provisioning for cruising followed by ice cream! MooTime Creamery it is! We met back up with Steve and then zoomed back out to the boats to eat dinner on our own. We went over to Steve and Janny’s boat for a movie. It was a comedy and we laughed really hard at various points. We called it a night about 2230.

Peel Away the old...

Back in 2000, Lynette used PeelAway on our 100 yr old house to remove 12 layers of paint, it was the safest, easiest way to remove lead-based paint. Now that company has come a long way, they have formulas for nearly any finish. PeelAway 7 is for varnish, epoxy and poly finishes. It's pretty amazing.

Dock Day 32 11/05/2016 San Diego, CA

We had to head back to the marina to meet up with Rocco the Rigger by 1100. We un-rafted from Janny and Steve’s boat without issue. While Tim was working with Rocco I was cleaning off the Peel Away. The Cetol responds very strangely, it just flakes off making it very difficult for me to contain. It doesn’t stick to the paper like paint will. Washing the wood off with a rag leaves a lot of orange in my bucket. I’m so pleased with how well the Peel Away has removed all this evil finish. Tim is excited to see how it looks after a prep sanding when the wood is dry.

It took me almost until dark to clean out all the decorative black caulking on the teak. I’m very tired. Tim and went out for pizza because we were both so tired from all our working today. Then we watched another girly movie and had some good laughs.

Dock Day 33 11/06/2016 San Diego, CA

Today Tim is teaching another sailing class so I was all by myself at the boat. I applied Peel Away on the port side cockpit and on the transom trim after I went shopping again. It took me about four hours to complete the preps, set-up and clean up. Then I applied some window cling to the port light in the head for some privacy. I have this strange paranoia that I might flash someone on the dock while taking care of my life businesses. This paranoia is especially strong at night when the light is on in the head. Now I have peace that this will not happen. Yay! Now I can relax!

Tim was still gone when I was done with what I have already written about so I labeled out binders that house all the manuals for all our special boat equipment. This eliminates the guessing on which binder the info will be in so we can get to the information faster. Hurray for efficiency!

Tim had a great time teaching today. We are both very tired from the time change and it becoming dark so early all of a sudden. We had grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato basil soup for dinner. It was the perfect meal since it has been getting much cooler when the sun goes down.

After a trip to Starbucks for a data run, we called it a night. Tomorrow will be a full day of cleaning off all that Peel Away that I placed today.

Dock Day 34 11/07/2016
Today was an exhausting day! I woke up so early, 0530. The time changes just mess me up for a week! I did not go shopping today! Yay! I spent the entire day of daylight cleaning off the Peel Away from the transom trim and the port side. All that I set up yesterday. I still have about 6 feet of the black caulking goop to remove as the daylight disappeared before I was done. I’m flat out tired! I also have little sore spots in my hands and tight muscles in my whole body from doing a contortionist’s balancing act to clean off the Peel Away. I’m going to sleep great tonight.

Tim had to do work items today that involved non-manual labor. We also did not get the call that our sails are ready. Hopefully tomorrow we will get them. Our satellite communicator came today and that has been a drama! I think the delivery drivers around here are crooked. Details don’t line up with what they are reporting back to Amazon.

When can we go?

Dock Day 27 - 30 San Diego, CA 10/29 - 11/01/2016

Tim was teaching over two of these days which he has already posted on the blog. Every day I have still been shopping for something whether it is for the boat or for eating and the likes. I’m still working on “out with the cotton items and in with the wicking materials.” These days it’s socks. I love the wool blend socks that I just purchased! They are comfy and just enough warmth without bulk. The days are getting cooler, but the humidity and sun makes it feel quite warm. The mornings feel a bit chilly with the humidity and cool air.

The test patches of Peel Away turned out very nicely after 18 hours of dew time. Now Tim and I have to figure out how and when as this has to be a coordinated effort with both of us. The removal process can leave open spaces that will leak if Tim doesn’t do any sealing soon after my work is done. We are working on our plan with this project. Stay tuned on this one.
I found some decent plastic style plates made from bamboo products that aren’t harmful to my health. I have removed our other thin plastic plates and glass plates from the boat. I purchased a pressure cooker (which I think I mentioned in an earlier post) and I need to get some practice with it. The galley has had quite a few additions that need a place to roost. The place for the pressure cooker is a bit awkward and I’m not sure I will be leaving it there. It seems I am in the process of doing a galley rework. I decided I hate the dish drainer I used during the summer on another boat. It’s going off the boat, it’s in my way in the galley and it makes the galley feel cluttered.

Be sure to vote!
It is election time and there were 17 propositions to vote on here in California! I spent over 2 hours at Starbucks reading each one of them and taking my stance on my ballot. Our ballots have been mailed at last! Tim and I are wondering how this presidential election is going to affect our travels to Mexico and elsewhere. Only time will tell on this issue.

We have been waiting for our vessel documentation from the Coast Guard for over two months and today Tim contacted them and sent an expedited request because we are planning to travel this month and need our documents. We sure hope it goes through and arrives quickly. This process increased the need for that printer, scanner, fax machine we have on our wish list. We had to go to Office Depot to print, scan and then email that Coast Guard document. While there we checked in on printers and found one from our desire list on sale much less than Amazon so we purchased it.

When we returned to the boat as we were lowering the printer into the cabin, Tim said, “What are we doing to ourselves?” We have no place for this printer, but it is needed for the weather fax and other things. So now we are talking about how we can make it all work and where we will place this piece of bulky equipment. That just means more shopping…I hate shopping. We just want to get going!

Tim & Lynette Jenné have their feet firmly planted in midair. We don't know what tomorrow brings, but are very excited to see what surprises come our way. Tim's favorite leadership quote is, "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." Antoine de Saint-Exupery
